(
Toronto, Canada Thursday March 7, 1996)

Upon the unanimous recommendation of both the Medical Advisory Committee and the Medical Staff Association of OCI/PMH, Dr. Michael Baker has been named Acting Director of Clinical Oncology at the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital.

Dr. Baker's appointment was unanimously approved on Thursday, March 7, at a special meeting of the Board of Directors of the OCI/PMH. His appointment is effective Friday, March 8, 1996.

Dr. Baker is currently the Director of the Oncology Program at The Toronto Hospital and Physician-in-Chief. For the past eighteen months, Dr. Baker and Dr. Sutcliffe have been working together preparing the framework for a joint clinical oncology program for patients being treated at both The Princess Margaret Hospital and The Toronto Hospital.

In proposing Dr. Baker's appointment, Medical Staff Association President, Dr. Normand Laperriere stated: "When we as a staff at OCI/PMH met to consider who might be the best candidate to replace Dr. Sutcliffe as head of clinical oncology, Dr. Michael Baker was our first choice. His clinical expertise as a medical oncologist, combined with his demonstrated ability as a medical administrator, makes him an outstanding choice. Both he and Dr. Sutcliffe shared our vision for a combined program and they were very successful in documenting that vision in a manner totally acceptable to the medical staff at OCI/PMH."

Dr. Ron Field, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at OCI/PMH also noted that "Dr. Baker is no stranger to this organization. As a former President of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, a member of the consultant staff of OCI/PMH and on the boards of numerous cancer funding and research agencies, Dr. Baker is well versed in the close collaboration between clinicians, researchers and patients that has given the Princess Margaret Hospital international recognition. We are very fortunate to have Michael as head of our oncology program."
