The Toronto Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital Integrate Cancer Services

The Board of Trustees of both the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital and The Toronto Hospital agreed today (Tuesday, January 30, 1996) to consolidate their respective oncology programs.

The new joint oncology program will consolidate all of the programs at Princess Margaret Hospital with all of the oncology programs at The Toronto Hospital under single medical leadership and single management leadership. Each hospital will retain it's own governance under the chairmanship of Peter A. Crossgrove at Princess Margaret Hospital and Fredrik S. Eaton at The Toronto Hospital.

The consolidation will enable both hospitals to rationalize all of their respective services with the objectives of (1) saving millions of dollars that can be reinvested in providing cancer care to Ontario residents, (2) creating a seamless oncology program between the two hospitals where previously patients were treated with less than optimal coordination of their care when moving between the two institutions, and (3) aggregating the resources devoted to cancer care, teaching and research to provide a sum greater than the two individual parts.

In making the announcement, Princess Margaret Hospital Chair, Peter Crossgrove stated, " We believe this new relationship will be of paramount importance in the delivery of better care to our patients. The many specialized strengths of Princess Margaret Hospital will now be combined with the outstanding programs that currently exist at The Toronto Hospital. Together we will both be much stronger to face the future. We will also be discussing further rationalization of cancer treatment with our neighbouring hospitals."

Fredrik Eaton, Chair of The Toronto Hospital said, "This new joint management arrangement should provide better service to our cancer patients and at the same time, create significant savings."

Effective immediately, Dr. Alan R. Hudson, President and Chief Executive Officer at The Toronto Hospital becomes Chief Excutive Officer of the joint hospital operations of Princess Margaret Hospital and The Toronto Hospital. The Toronto Hospital is Canada's largest acute care hospital with 1,200 inpatient beds. Oncology was designated as one of four priority programs in 1992 and recognizes the fact that approximately three out of ten patients at The Toronto Hospital are treated for cancer related illnesses. Princess Margaret Hospital, recognized as Canada's premier cancer hospital, moved to University Avenue opposite The Toronto Hospital in 1995 with approximately 100 inpatient beds. This new relationship will permit the continued integration of cancer programs both from a conceptual and physical standpoint.
